Greetings from Public Relations Officer
It is indeed an honor to serve as your 2012-13 District 55 Public Relations Officer (PRO). It is my responsibility to generate positive awareness of the Toastmasters brand – Spread the Word – for the purpose of attracting and retaining members in each of our District 55 clubs. The position will require keeping the public and members informed about club or district activities through effective communication channels and media relations. Good PR is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics. If done effectively, it will build membership and gain public recognition.
As Abraham Lincoln once said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four hours sharpening the ax.” Toastmasters International did a lot of that ax grinding for us, so be sure to use the time-saving resources and tools they provide to properly Spread The Word, including the following links:
Let the World Know provides everything you need to know about conducting PR in Toastmasters, including contacting the news media.
Sample News Releases: A variety of fill-in-the-blank news releases are available for you to download.
Newsletter Templates: Basic and free templates designed to look great on major email applications and mobile devices.
Social Networking will help your club and/or district become more visible across the Web.
Media Center: A one-stop source for information about the organization. It includes organizational news releases, news coverage, an electronic media kit and a multimedia library with access to the Toastmasters official podcast, photos and videos (including PSAs).
M/PR Newsletter: A quarterly publication that offers advice about marketing and public relations. It includes timely articles, trends and tips.
Toastmaster magazine is a monthly publication that explores the topics of leadership and communication.
Virtual Brand Portal is your convenient resource for brand information. Here you can download logos, graphic elements, stationery, photos, marketing materials, club and district website design guidelines and other resources for your club and district.
It’s a proven fact that “Word of Mouth” is the most effective way to communicate any message. In the past that was a very slow process. However, we are fortunate to live in a time where social media can rev-up this word of mouth process and quickly Spread the Word for little or no investment.
Last year Toastmasters International launched a new look and motto, “Where Leaders Are Made,” about our worldwide organization. I want to thank my predecessor, Dwayne Windham, for all his hard work in implementing these changes throughout District 55. We are fortunate to have Dwayne as District Webmaster this year. It is important that District 55 clubs embrace the Toastmasters brand as a fundamental part of our local efforts to improve leadership and communication skills, recruit new members, and encourage club achievement.
I personally challenge each of you to make sure that one of our most valuable assets, our club websites, are making a good first impression on visitors, through giving them reasons to join, promoting the accomplishments of our members and teams, and providing accurate information on when and where you meet.
I look forward to working with all of you, and please feel free to contact me at any time.
