10 Steps to a Painless PR Program: How to Build Your Membership Without Spending a Fortune in Time or $$
Kathy Moore, Public Relations Officer
My goal, as PRO this year, is to make PR painless for clubs by teaching you step-by-step how to do it and, by making it FUN!! So, I'm turning it into a game where you can earn points towards valuable prizes for using PR effectively in your club. Following the steps will help you increase your membership. The steps range in difficulty and, therefore, points are awarded accordingly.
Step #1-- Get members to bring in old Toastmaster magazines. Make a label that says something like this: "Toastmasters is a great way to improve your communication and leadership skills. To find out how you can visit a club meeting near you, call __________ or email _________ or visit this website."
3 points will be awarded per magazine placed in the lobby of each different office or public library. Stay tuned for details about what you can win.
Step #2-- Advertise your club meeting in a free internet venue like craigslist.com, or in one of your local city directories (example: http://www.247onlinenetwork.com)
5 points for every online ad you submit. (proof required.)
Step #3--Submit an article about Toastmasters that includes information on your club meetings for publishing on an on-line ezine like www.about.com OR submit to the PRO your own personal story from one of these categories: "How Toastmasters Has Improved My Life" or "How Toastmasters Has Helped in My Career Growth."
10 points each submission
100 points if your article is published
Step #4--Drop off flyers about your club to businesses located around your meeting place.
15 points each drop. (Send us a list.)
Step #5--Plan a Toastmasters approved event open to the public (like an open house, or comedy night) and invite the public. Pass out Toastmaster information to prospects.
20 points for event
25 points for each resulting new member
step #6-- Build your freetoasthost or other website. (If this step is already done, earn automatic bonus points.)
30 points
10 points early bird bonus
Step #7-- Add at least 1 contact name on-line to your website so potential visitors will know who to contact. Earn bonus if you already have at least one.
Step #8--Write a press release about New Officers installation, an open-to-the-public event, conference or TLI being held in your area, some community service that your club is involved with like speechcraft, or anything that is newsworthy. (See jeffcrilley.com or ask PRO for help.)
30 points for every press release you write.
Step #9-- Submit your completed press release to a local radio or TV station or newspaper.
40 points for every press release you submit.
5 points for each pr contact you forward for your area to district PRO
(newscasters, on-air radio personnel, newspaper reporters or editors to compile
our own district 55 pr directory.)
Step #10--100 points for every press release that turns into an article or interview.
